This selection focuses on the different rates of development of human societies on different continents and why the timing of development components, like food production, happened independently in some places and were imported from other societies in other places. The explanations for the variations demolishes the grounds for racist theories of history. At just over 400 pages, Diamond's arguments are through and convincing.
