The Federalist Papers

The eighty-five Federalist Papers were written in 1787 by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay to explain and promote the acceptance of the draft Constitution in the state of New York, which at that time was the largest and strongest of the 13 newly independent states. The Papers served well and the Constitution was passed. Now 237 years later, the Papers are still serving to help us understand what the founders had in mind for the new country. However, current scholars do not agree on how to interpret the Papers.
So rather than struggle to understand the Papers in the language of the time, we will consult the Great Courses interpretation of the Papers presented by Professor Joseph L. Hoffmann, Indiana University Maurer School of Law. The materials include twelve 30-minute lectures and a 103-page Course Guidebook. In addition, we will also evaluate whether this style of presentation/discussion works for our book club.
Unfortunately, the course materials are no longer on sale at a reduced price; but they are available free in audio form, thanks to Leaguer Tom Ging, guest discussion leader, or in video form from Hoopla thanks to the Jefferson County Library. To get instructions for receiving the audio or video files, contact Marilyn Brown (Marilyn.brown4559@icloud.com) .
