The Chancellor: The Remarkable Odyssey of Angela Merkel
by Kati Marton
This biography written by journalist Kati Marton, traces the rise of Angela Merkel from her early life as a physics student in East Germany to her 16-year term as chancellor of a reunified Germany. The 303-page book, published in 2021, highlights her personal traits, as well as the people who mentored her, and duly credits the role of luck in her political success. Ms. Merkel’s story offers a template for any woman aspiring for a powerful position in government.

Our February book is All the Frequent Troubles of Our Day: The True Story of the American Woman at the Heart of the German Resistance to Hitler. This choice is a perfect complement to The Chancellor. Mildred Harnack, a little-known teacher from Wisconsin, living in Berlin, ran the largest resistance group in Berlin during World War II. The author is Harnack’s great-great-niece.

An e-copy of the full schedule of book choices for our 2022-2023 season is available to download on the League website. To be added to our book club mailing list, email Marilyn Brown at marilbrown@aol.com.
