How the Word is Passed:
A Reckoning
with the History of Slavery Across America
by Clint Smith
In a deeply researched and transporting exploration of the legacy of slavery and its imprint on centuries of American history, the book illustrates how some of our country’s most essential stories are hidden in plain view. From Monticello, in Charlottesville,VA, to the African Burial Ground in Lower Manhattan, the author skillfully weaves interviews with scholarship and personal observation, asking, “How different might our country look if all of us fully understood what had happened here?” Written in 2021 and 283 pages long.
Every reader of the book, club member or not, is welcome to join our ZOOM discussion session, Wednesday, March 15 at 1 pm. Our April book,
Cuba - An American History
, author, is a historian at New York University who was born in Cuba, and packs “five centuries [of U.S./Cuba interrelationships] into concise chapters brimming with detail and page-turning momentum," according to the Guardian review, bringing her story right up to the present. Is it time to rethink the U.S. relationship with Cuba?
